Custom Barndominiums and Shouses Across North Dakota
Live, Work, and Store It All Under One Roof
A barndominium or shouse is not a compromise. It is a smarter way to build. By combining living space and shop space under one steel-framed roof, you get the durability, energy efficiency, and lower long-term cost of pre-engineered steel construction with the comfort, finish quality, and design flexibility of a custom home. Anderco Enterprises designs and constructs custom barndominiums and shouses across North Dakota for families, ranchers, hobbyists, and tradespeople who want a home and a workspace built to actually fit how they live.
What's the Difference?

In practice, most of our clients want a mix of both. We design around your actual life, not the label.
The terms get used interchangeably, but here's how we think about it:
Barndominium (or Barndo)
A residential structure built in the style and shape of a barn, often with high open ceilings, post-frame or steel construction, and a more rustic or industrial aesthetic. Living quarters are the primary use, with optional shop or storage space attached or integrated.
Shouse (shop + house)
A combined shop and house, where the shop space is a primary feature, not just a garage. Common for ranchers, mechanics, hobbyists, and anyone whose work or hobby needs serious square footage right next to home.
In practice, most of our clients want a mix of both. We design around your actual life, not the label.

Why Build a Barndo or Shouse with Anderco
A barndo is part house and part building. That means it needs both the design sense of a home builder and the engineering muscle of a commercial steel contractor. We are a full-service contractor that handles both. Foundation, framing, exterior, insulation, mechanical, finish: it all runs through one team accountable to one project. For North Dakota homeowners, that matters because the building has to handle our winters, our summers, and the way we actually live in this part of the country.
We build with steel from Ascent Buildings, Cornerstone Building Brands, and Ceco Building Systems. The steel structure is engineered for ND snow and wind loads. The interior is finished the way you want to live in it.
What's Possible in a Barndo or Shouse

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Barndo costs vary widely depending on size, finish level, and how much shop space is included alongside the living quarters. Generally, a barndominium can come in below the cost per square foot of equivalent traditional construction, especially when you are getting both living and shop space in one structure. We price every project to your specific design rather than to a generic per-square-foot rule.
-
Many of our clients sequence the build so the living quarters are completed and occupied first, with shop space or additional finish work continuing afterward. This depends on your local code and inspection requirements, but it is often possible and we will plan around it from the start.
-
Many lenders now finance barndominiums as primary residences, though the lending landscape varies. We can share what we have seen work with clients in North Dakota and recommend you talk to a local lender experienced with steel-frame residential construction early in the process.
